Preventing Aboriginal Suicide essays
Preventing Aboriginal Suicide essays DOES A SHIFT IN THE DOMINANT SCHOOLING PARADIGM email: lloyd_ryan@nf.sympatico.ca It is with growing alarm, concern and compassion that we witness the continuing (and growing?) high rate of suicide in Canadas Aboriginal community. This phenomenon has numerous far-reaching and negative implications and, up to the present, few satisfactory explanations and fewer proposed solutions. It is, thus, imperative that aspects of contemporary Aboriginal personal and community living that have not yet come under sufficient scrutiny be examined and analyzed, not for anthropological or abstract sociological purposes, but for intensely personal and life purposes. It must be realized that, sometimes, it is that which is most ubiquitous and familiar which may be most ignored, the assumption being that what is common is not significant. An example is parasites borne by the river that has fed us for generations, or heavy metals in our staple food, both contributing to chronic health problems, and both ignored because we expect severe dysfunction to have exotic and unfamiliar dress. It is, thus, proposed that the existing predominant model of schooling, in this case schooling of Aboriginal children, come under careful scrutiny. Aboriginals, like most other Canadians, have accepted, now almost without question, the "principle" that education is the key to a secure and happy future. This principle may be as fraught with problems as the one-time equally-accepted principle that the earth was the centre of the universe and that the sun was just one of earth's satellites. Just as it was heresy to question the geo-centric universe, it is now similar heresy to question the "principle", the dogma, of the value of "education". This may not be merely a questioning of the value of "education" (whatever it is we mean by that). Indeed, Aboriginal communities have recognized that some elements of the schooling system have potential for negati...

How to Ace Your Econometrics Test
How to Ace Your Econometrics Test Econometrics is the most difficult course for economics majors. These tips should help you triumph over your econometrics test. If you can ace Econometrics, you can pass any Economics course. Difficulty: Easy Time Required: As Little Time As Possible Heres How Find out the material covered on the test! Econometrics tests tend to be either mainly theory or mainly computational. Each one should be studied differently.Find out if youll be allowed to have a formula sheet for the exam. Will one be provided for you, or will you be able to bring your own cheat sheet of econometric and statistical formulas?DO NOT wait until the night before to create an econometrics cheat sheet. Create it as youre studying, and use it when youre solving practice problems, so youll be very familiar with your sheet.Have a legible and organized econometrics cheat sheet. On a stressful test, you dont want to be searching for a term or trying to decipher the writing. This is critical for tests with time limits.Make songs to help you remember definitions. Its silly, but it works! [sings] Correlation is covariance over the product of their deviations. I make little drum beats with my thumb (seriously).MOST IMPORTANT: If assigned practice problems, DO THEM! Most econometr ics test questions are quite similar to suggested questions. Students score at least 20% better by doing them in my experience. Try to get old econometrics exams from exam banks, libraries, or former students. These are particularly useful if the same economics professor has taught the course for many years.Talk to former students of the course. Theyll know the examination style of the professor and may be able to provide useful tips. Find out if his tests are from the book or from the lectures.Try to make your study environment as similar as possible to the econometrics test situation. If you drink coffee while studying see if you can have a coffee in the exam room or have some right before. If your test is in the morning, study in the morning if possible. Being comfortable with a situation will prevent you from panicking and forgetting what youve learned.Try to figure out what questions the professor could ask, then answer them. Youd be surprised how often your guesses are correct. There are only so many different econometrics questions.DO NOT pull an all nighter and cheat yourself out of sleep. The extra ho urs of sleep will help you more than a couple hours of cramming. You need all your strength to slay the econometrics demon! Dont study the hour before the test. It never works and it will just get you nervous. Do what you can to stay relaxed. I find playing a video game helps me, but find something that works for you. When you get the test, read all the questions first, and answer the one you think is easiest immediately. That will put you in a positive frame of mind for the other questions.Dont spend too much time on one question. Feel free to skip a part of a question and go on to something else. Ive seen too many good students unnecessarily run out of time. Tips Sometimes it will seem impossible to find a piece of information you need, but you can do it if youre a little creative. If you need to get the standard error, you can do it if you know the t-stat.Wear layered clothing because you never know how hot or cold the room will be. I usually wear a sweater with a t-shirt under it, so I can take the sweater off if the room is warm.Dont program formulas into your calculator if youre not allowed to. We often notice and its not worth getting kicked out of school for. Cheat is common in econometrics, so profs watch for it.The time you spend on a question should be proportional to the percentage of marks it is worth. Dont spend a lot of time on small questions!Dont get too upset with yourself if you dont do well. Sometimes it just isnt your day. Hall of Fame pitcher Nolan Ryan lost 294 games, so dont worry if you lose a test on occasion. What You Need pencileraserpenscalculator (if allowed)cheat sheet (if allowed)a confident attitude

Debord, Rutherford and Giroux Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1000 words
Debord, Rutherford and Giroux - Essay Example Nothing, not even an essay into the general nature of meaning of things, should be viewed out of its context. Thus, at the very onset, this essay admits that its purpose in being is to examine the political nature of the present age through the light of communication media. Probably the most emblemic symbol of the present age of international development is the media - electronic and otherwise. This is because the media sells things - goods, services, ideas, opinions, etc - all that is necessary to sustain this present generation of enhanced civilization in the present day and well into the future. Whether it is a commercial enterprise selling biscuits for profit or a politician selling him- or herself for self-aggrandizement the media is there to help do the job. Thus, it is necessary to know how the media views the nature of things and influences it so that it can be better understood how the media's pervasive influence on life in the 21st century moulds its modes of epistemology. This shall be done so now with the views of three European thinkers - Debord, Rutherford and Giroux - on how the individual consciousness thrives or languishes amid the greater world at large. The essay shall begin on the following very germane note - Hegemony, the rule of the dominant, in the individual consciousness is the subjectivity that the hegemony itself has instilled psychologically in it. This is so according to Louis Althusser (Lecture Notes 2) and quite in line with what Gramsci thought of it as the subjected class accepting the values and mores of the dominant class as 'common sense' and 'natural' to sustain hegemony - Gramsci's definition of the rule of the dominant class over the subjected one (Lecture Notes 2). The hegemonistic rule is thus natural and second nature in the subject, who may have been subjected to its influence right from birth, though it may not stand in his or her stead.DeBord and the 'Spectacle' To understand DeBord better it is necessary to understand his conception of what he terms as the 'spectacle' better - "The spectacle is not a collection of images; rather it is a social relationship between people that is mediated by images". And, - "The spectacle cannot be understood as either a deliberate distortion of the visual world or as a product of the technology of the mass dissemination of images. It is much better viewed as a Weltanschauung that has been actualized, translated into the material realm - a world view translated into an objective force". (Lecture Notes 2) So what do these two statement signify In terms of mass communications DeBord can be correlated with Gramsci in the following sense - The spectacle is the otherness that is imposed around the individual consciousness, the being-in-itself, that it must acknowledge all

The Themes of How Sharp Snaffles got his Capital and Wife Essay exampl
The Themes of ââ¬Å"How Sharp Snaffles got his Capital and Wifeâ⬠Romance, ââ¬ËThe Big Lieââ¬â¢, humor, and Moral, ââ¬Å"How Sharp Snaffles got his Capital and Wifeâ⬠contains all of these in a wonderfully written story by William Gilmore Simms. Sit back and enjoy a ââ¬Å"potationâ⬠(423) from a ââ¬Å"corpulent barrel of Western uisquebaugh â⬠(422) while I argue my truths or is that ââ¬ËLieââ¬â¢. This romantic story is about the trails and tribulations Sam Snaffles endured to capture the affections of Mary Ann Hopson. Sam describes Mary Ann as ââ¬Å", and so all over beautiful! O Lawd! When I thinks of it and them times, I donââ¬â¢t see how ââ¬Ëtwas possible to think of buck-hunting when thar was sich a doe, with sich eyes shining me on!â⬠(426) After Sam is denied Mary Annââ¬â¢s hand in marriage, because he has no capital, they meet in the forest outside of Mary Annââ¬â¢s home she tells Sam ââ¬Å"Iââ¬â¢ll be true to you, Sam. I loves nobody in all the world so much as I loves youâ⬠(434) Sam gets the capital needed to satisfy her father and marry his true love in the end. The Websterââ¬â¢s definition of ââ¬ËBig Lieââ¬â¢ is ââ¬Å"a deliberate gross distortion of the truth used especially as a propaganda tacticâ⬠and this is well illustrated in the story. The story opens at the end of a week of hunting and the group is sitting around the fire awaiting ââ¬Å"The Lying Camp!â⬠The main character Sam Snaffles is requested to tell the story of how he found ââ¬ËCapital ââ¬Ë so he could marry his true love, Mary Ann Hopson. As Sam begins his story he is called down by the ââ¬ËBig Lieââ¬â¢ saying, ââ¬Å"All youââ¬â¢ve been a-saying is jest nothing but the naked truth as I know it.â⬠(426) Samââ¬â¢s reply is ââ¬Å"And howââ¬â¢s a man to lie decently onless you lets him hev a bit of truth to go upon? The truthââ¬â¢s nothing but a peg in the wall that I hangs the lie upon.â⬠(426) Samââ¬â¢s story of how he got the ââ¬Ëcapitalââ¬â¢ is amazing and just to show how big it grew, hereââ¬â¢s a descripti on of the total capital Sam got, ââ¬Å"From the bââ¬â¢ar . . . First, thar waur the hide, $20; then 450 pounds of meat, at 10 cents, was $45; then the grease, 14 pounds, $14; and the tallow, some $6 more; and the biled marrow, $11.â⬠The geese ââ¬Å"2700 wild-geese, at 50 cents, you sees, must be more than $1350.â⬠The honey ââ¬Å"got something over two thousand gallons of the purest, sweetest, yellowest honey you ever did see.â⬠Humor is located throughout this story. One of my favorite parts is when Mary Annââ¬â¢s father asked Samââ¬â¢s horse if Sa... ... look in the mirror and asked him what he saw: that wonââ¬â¢t edzactly do. I tell you now, look good, and ax yourself ef youââ¬â¢re the sawt of looking man that hes any right to be feyther-in-law to a fine, young, handsome-looking fellow like me, whatââ¬â¢s got the ââ¬Å"capital?â⬠à à à à à Then he laughed out at the humor of the situation; and he says, ââ¬ËWell, Sam Snaffles, youââ¬â¢ve got me dead this time. Youââ¬â¢re a different man from what I thought you. But, Sam, youââ¬â¢ll confess, I reckon, that ef I hednââ¬â¢t sent you off with a flea in your ear when I hed you up afore the looking-glass, youââ¬â¢d never haââ¬â¢ gone to work to git the ââ¬Å"capital.â⬠(461) à à à à à This is a humorous story that tells of romance and gives us a lesson in life and full of honesty (lies). This merging of all these themes has created a wonderful story that will make me read more of William Gilmore Simms stories. I wonder what Bald Head Billy Baldly did during the Flurriday War? Assignment 055 Task a
Assignment 55(NOTES, need to write up) Task a DUTY OF CARE AND SAFEGUARDING à ·1) duty of care is to keep children and young people safe and to protect them from sexual, physical and emotional harm. Children have a right to be safe and to be treated with respect and dignity. We as adults must take reasonable steps to ensure the safety and well being of pupils. Failure to do this could be regarded as professional neglect. Always act and be seen to act in the childââ¬â¢s best interests. 2) Duty of care safeguards children by the setting having done risk assessments and precautions taken to avoid accidents or the spreading of infections. Follow the correct procedures if you have any concerns for the childââ¬â¢s well being, set clear boundaries for children depending on age, stage and development and discourage any behaviour, which could result in a child being harmed or upset. Assessments and observations on children can alert you to any problems that may need addressing and the discussions with parents and other professionals.Always listen to what children have to say and take any concerns they may have seriously. 1) Duty of Care includes the concepts: â⬠¢ to keep individuals safe â⬠¢ to keep individuals free from harm â⬠¢ to give choice Duty of care is a key concept in working with other human beings. It is a legal term for safeguarding self and others. Children and young people are often vulnerable as they are yet to develop the physical and cognitive capacity to fully care for themselves; they need care and protection from the adults around them.Health and social care organisations have what is called a duty of care towards the people they look after. That means that they must do everything they can to keep the people in their care safe from harm. ââ¬ËDuty of careââ¬â¢ means a requirement to exercise a ââ¬Ëreasonableââ¬â¢ degree of attention and caution to avoid negligence which would lead to harm to other people. Working with ch ildren and young people brings a significant duty of care and we need to recognise that the younger and more vulnerable the child the greater the duty of care.Your vigilance and attention keeps children and young people safe as they develop: â⬠¢ the ability to foresee and cope with potential dangers â⬠¢ more robust immune systems â⬠¢ empathy ââ¬âunderstanding their actions may hurt or upset others â⬠¢ communication skills to be able to talk about harm others may be doing to them 2) duty of care is a requirement to excercise a reasonable degree of attention and caution to avoid negligence which would lead to harm to others. your vigilance and attention keeps young children safe as they develop

What Is a Chemical Reaction
You encounter chemical reactions all the time. Fire, respiration, and cooking all involve chemical reactions. Yet, do you know what exactly a chemical reaction is? Heres the answer to the question. Chemical Reaction Definition Simply put, a chemical reaction is any transformation from one set of chemicals into another set. If the starting and ending substances are the same, a change may have occurred, but not a chemical reaction. A reaction involves a rearrangement of molecules or ions into a different structure. Contrast this with a physical change, where the appearance is altered, but the molecular structure is unchanged, or a nuclear reaction, in which the composition of the atomic nucleus changes. In a chemical reaction, the atomic nucleus is untouched, but electrons may be transferred or shared to break and form chemical bonds. In both physical changes and chemical changes (reactions), the number of atoms of each element are the same both before and after a process occurs. However, in a physical change, the atoms maintain their same arrangement into molecules and compounds. In a chemical reaction, the atoms form new products, molecules, and compounds. Signs a Chemical Reaction Has Occurred Since you cant look at chemicals at a molecular level with the naked eye, its helpful to know signs that indicate a reaction has occurred. A chemical reaction is often accompanied by a temperature change, bubbles, color change, and/or precipitate formation. Chemical Reactions and Chemical Equations The atoms and molecules that interact are called the reactants. The atoms and molecules produced by the reaction are called products. Chemists use a shorthand notation called a chemical equation to indicate the reactants and the products. In this notation, the reactants are listed on the left side, the products are listed on the right side, and the reactants and products are separated by an arrow showing which direction the reaction proceeds. While many chemical equations show reactants forming products, in reality, the chemical reaction often proceeds in the other direction, too. In a chemical reaction and a chemical equation, no new atoms are created or lost (conservation of mass), but chemical bonds may be broken and formed between different atoms. Chemical equations may be either unbalanced or balanced. An unbalanced chemical equation doesnt account for conservation of mass, but its often a good starting point because it lists the products and reactants and the direction of the chemical reaction. As an example, consider rust formation. When rust forms, the metal iron reacts with oxygen in the air to form a new compound, iron oxide (rust). This chemical reaction may be expressed by the following unbalanced chemical equation, which may be written either using words or using the chemical symbols for the elements: iron plus oxygen yields iron oxide Fe O ââ â FeO A more accurate description of a chemical reaction is given by writing a balanced chemical equation. A balanced chemical equation is written so the number of atoms of each type of element are the same for both the products and reactants. Coefficients in front of chemical species indicate quantities of reactants, while subscripts within a compound indicate the number of atoms of each element. Balanced chemical equations typically list the state of matter of each reactant (s for solid, l for liquid, g for gas). So, the balanced equation for the chemical reaction of rust formation becomes: 2 Fe(s) O2(g) ââ â 2 FeO(s) Examples of Chemical Reactions There are millions of chemical reactions! Here are some examples: Fire (combustion)Baking a cakeCooking an eggMixing baking soda and vinegar to produce salt and carbon dioxide gas Chemical reactions may also be categorized according to general types of reactions. Theres more than one name for each type of reaction, so that may be confusing, but the form of the equation should be easy to recognize: Synthesis reaction or direct combination: A B ââ â ABAnalysis reaction or decomposition: AB ââ â A BSingle displacement or substitution:à A BC ââ â AC BMetathesis or double displacement:à AB CD ââ â AD CB Other types of reactions are redox reactions, acid-base reactions, combustion, isomerization, and hydrolysis. Chemical reactions are everywhere. Learn More What Is the Difference Between a Chemical Reaction and a Chemical Equation?Exothermic and Endothermic Reactions
